This piece was actually written about the place where he and his wife spent there honeymoon. He wrote it after his wife had a miscarriage of his child, and he was trying to recapture some of the happiness he had felt with her. However, this melancholy movement alludes I guess to the later suffering he knew he would experience. Past memories tainted by the present, making them all the more beautiful.

The most haunting piece of music I have ever heard. As a Jew it makes me picture the head of the Jewish community in Spain in 1492, Rabbi Don Yitzhak Abarbanel standing in front of Ferdinand and Isabella pleading in vain with them to rescind the Edict of Expulsion of the Jews. I then think of long lines of refugee Jews heading sadly to the ports of Spain to find a ship to take them away.

Although I have many versions of this beautiful concierto, this version is terrific. I was particularly interested in the genesis of the song and the background film footage was a nice touch. I'm not sure who posted this version, but thanks very much.Karl

i get the feeling that the composer wrote this piece, showing that he is sad and asking God for mercy and compassion.
