Yes, King was talking about skin color. Its a very applicable statement though, people should be judged on content of character, not arbitrary unchangeable attributes. Anyone who says, "If it wasn't for America you'd be speaking German right now" is a poor student of history and should be called such, but its silly to call him a "typical American". Content of character(which is poor) not some silly affiliation with a country.

Those who mock the men who gave their lives for years in a purely European war. Spoiled, fat, uneducated children who speak of the USA as though it owns the world. The US President is the most powerful main in the world, yet everyone hated Bush, were glad to see the back of him. The "character" you speak of is that of a brainwashed child with no hope. (King meant coloureds).

basically he's just singing a song that the audience will comply to and the hook is the chorus... it's pretty much just a good tune well written.
