It's a Scottish folk ballad that was titled Child # 2 or The Ballad of the Elfin Knight. It was written in the 1600s about an elf who was going to kidnap a woman and force her to be his lover unless she could perform some seemingly impossible tasks. In other versions she responds with a list of tasks of her own and avoids being taken.

@vampod1 scarborough fair was not written by Sarah Brightman, nor was she the first person to sing the song. Therefore they have every right to sing the song.
