Uke & voice. Nothing else.I was at a singers' night at a folk club not so long ago and a young woman got up and sang this unaccompanied and it was superb - hardly a dry eye in the house. Like most people I know Liverpool Lullaby as a Cilla Black song and when I mentioned this to the young singer, she thought I was joking. She'd never heard Cilla sing this song (Idon't think she thought of Cilla as a singer, actually) and told me she'd got it rom the Stan Kelly Songbook. It turns out that this is a traditional Tyneside air called "Dollia" and the lyrics were written by Mr Kelly. It is one of those songs that has stuck in my head even after so many years so when I came to write the lyrics down they came wih very little effort - though I can't vouch for their being 100% accurate. Here are the lyrics followed by some notes on the vernacular:Oh you are a mucky kid, Dirty as a dustbin lid. When he hears the things you did, You'll get a belt from your Dad. Oh you have your father's nose, So crimson in the dark it glows, If you're not asleep when the boozers close, You'll get a belt from your Dad. You look so scruffy lying there Strawberry-jam tufts in your hair, Though in the world you haven't a care And I have got so many. It's a bitter struggle every day Living on your father's pay, The bugger drinks it all away And leaves me without any. Although we have no silver spoon, Better days are coming soon Our Nelly's working at the loom And she gets paid on Friday. Perhaps one day we'll get a bath, When Littlewoods provide the cash, We'll buy a house in Knotty Ash And get your Dad a brewery. Oh you are a mucky kid, Dirty as a dustbin lid. When he hears the things you did You'll get a belt from your Dad. Oh you have your father's face, You're growing up a real hard case, But there's not a one can take your place, So go to sleep for Mammy. Mucky = DirtyDustbin = TrashcanBelt = BeatingBoozer = Pub/BarJam-Tufts = I guess it's hair stuck together with jam/jellyBugger = A bad personLittlewoods = Football Pools company. A forerunner to the Lottery

Thanks Shas. This was a pop song by Cilla Black (a kind of English, white Dionne Warwick) in the late 60s, believe it or not. Unusual subject matter for a pop song and that type of singer.

Thanks Ken. I didn't think it would benefit from more instruments or voices.

Cheers Russ.Your welcome to the translation. Even in the English speaking world there are some strange variations in language. I fing a few Americanisms confusing at times.

Thanks for sharing this song along with the lyrics and key to the local vernacular. Great choice and it really suits your voice and the uke.
