Well, nothing to say, this was the golden age for Pavarotti. But still I think his singing, even in this period when he was at his best, cannot compare to that of Del Monaco or Di Stefano, not to mention Caruso.

People forget that some singers have suggestive sound of voice per se. In other words, they don't have to be so dramatically involved to be convincing and to make emotional impact. I believe there are only few singers who have this extraordinary quality and I think Pavarotti is one of them.

But if someone listens to Pavarotti's Rodolfo or Pinkerton on Karajan recordings it is difficult to say that these perfomances are not suggestive.

I don't find Pavarotti's singing mechanical because he has the greatest emotional impact on me among all tenors ; the same intensity I can find only at Callas. You feel it or you don't. So, your statement is subjective just like mine. It's true that some of his performances are more and some less suggestive but that is the case with every singer. For instance I never liked his ''E lucevan le stelle'' but this one is pretty good even though I prefer Domingo and Di Stefano.

danimae1210, Yeah, I have a book of piano reductions, all Puccini arias. I'm no musician & so far this is the only 1 I've got down. It is very dynamic. The softest parts so soft u can miss sounding the note, the loudest parts hurt ur finger tips. You're right. This aria, being moments b4 Mario's execution where he sings of nothing other than his love of Tosca in a poetic recollection of nights of love w her & then his anguish of death, is done beautifully here by the greatest singer!

Quis-When was the last time you were spanked? You surely need one now for blurting out such nonsense. Go to your corner and do not open your mouth until you over come your lack of perception, knowledge and common sense. Now get lost you little fiddlestick.
